What You Need to Get Started
Putting together your own video game station for exercise is quite easy. All you need is a TV, a video game console, a copy of a dance video game, and a dance pad. We recommend the PlayStation®2 video game console because it has the most dance games available for it, including the recently released In The Groove.

Dance Video Games
The two most popular dance video game series on the PlayStation 2, are In The Groove® and Dance Dance Revolution.

In The Groove®
In The Groove by Roxor Games was released to Arcades in 2004, and has built up quite a cult following with its song selection and dance steps.

In June 2005 the PlayStation 2 version of In The Groove was released. This new version of In The Groove featured the same songs and steps that made it an arcade favorite, but added great new modes for beginner players and a full Fitness Mode.

In The Groove’s Fitness Mode counts calories while you play! You can customize your workout to fit how much exercise you'd like to get in each session. Save your progress to a Memory Card to track your results over time!

Dance Dance Revolution™
The Dance Dance Revolution series was created by Konami in Japan and the series has been in arcades since the late 90’s. Dance Dance Revolution features the familiar four-arrow gameplay and offers a more “Japanese” influenced soundtrack than In The Groove. Each game in The Dance Dance Revolution series features single-player, double-player and exercise modes.

What to Look For in a Dance Pad
There are three main types of dance pads on the market today- flat pads, foam insert pads, and metal pads.

Flat Dance Pads
Flat dance pads are great for beginner players because they are relatively inexpensive and don’t take up much room in the home. The official In The Groove Pad is widely regarded as the best valued flat pad and is durable enough to be an official Sony licensed product.

Foam Insert Dance Pads
These pads feature a foam insert that can be zipped up inside the dance pad itself. These foam inserts actually help cushion your feet as you use the dance pad, making it very useful for people playing dance video games for fitness.

There are a few variations of insert pads on the market, but the original, and most popular one is the RedOctane Ignition Pad. The Ignition Pad features a long lasting dense foam insert, an anti-slip bottom, and raised arrow buttons that help position you on the pad.

Metal Dance Pads
The costliest, but most durable pads available for video game consoles are metal pads. Metal pads are meant to mimic the arcade experience, and are preferred by most hardcore dance gamers. Where it is recommended to play without your shoes on flat and foam insert dance pads, metal pads need to be played with your shoes on.

The RedOctane Afterburner Metal Pad features a stainless steel body, and recessed polycarbonate arrows that are capable of taking quite a beating.
